Kids learn the game at Capital Hills @ Albany and Hook A Kid On Golf
ALBANY BEGINS PROGRAM, TROY ADVANCES
Editor’s Note: Jim Hefti ran the first “Hook A Kid On Golf” program at Capital Hills @ Albany this summer. The following is his recollections with teaching kids during the first year of operation, helping 67 kids from places like the AME Israel Church summer youth program.
It was a challenging and yet rewarding experience. Of the 67 kids, 65 had never held a golf club previous to this activity. In addition, the students were introduced to the history of the game, the business of golf, golf course maintenance, how golf may become an avenue in the future for an career choice through PGA/PGM program or Turfgrass programs at SUNY campuses as well as nationwide.

FREAR PARK HOSTS 2ND MAYOR’S CUP
TROY – A group of 50 golfers gathered at Frear Park Golf Course on Monday, June 27, to raise money for the 2nd Annual “Hook A Kid On Golf” clinics that begin Monday, July 11. It’s the annual Mayor’s Cup fundraising tournament that dedicates itself to a worthy charity.

NEW EQUIPMENT TO REVIVE FREAR, PASSES ON SALE APRIL 4
TROY – Mayor Harry Tutunjian announced that the city’s Par-71, 18-hole Frear Park Golf Course will open Monday, April 18 at 8:00AM. With new equipment, and the second year of “Hook A Kid On Golf,” Frear is destined to be a top municipal spot in the Capital Area.
“Originally designed in 1931, Frear Park Golf Course is the area’s premier 18-hole municipal golf course,” Tutunjian said in a release. “This affordable but challenging course, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, will soon be open for the 2011 season for pro and scratch golfers alike.

TROY – Monday morning, Mayor Harry Tutunjian struck his ceremonial opening tee shot at Troy’s Frear Park Golf Course but unlike previous years, he was not alone on stage. He was joined by several school kids, off this week, who want to take part in “Hook A Kid On Golf.”
