Scorecard at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH SCORECARD: June 1, 2010

Hole #1: Par-4, 380 yards.

USGA: Priority is to keep the ball in the fairway to allow a clear approach to a very narrow green. Left greenside bunker runs length of green that has been enlarged by 700 sq. ft. Right bunker split in two.
Craig: Hit tee shot into right thick rough, second shot blasted out of long grass, left it short. Third shot over back. Fourth ran back to front of green. Three-putt. Score: 7

Hole #2: Par-4, 502 yards.

USGA: Fairway landing area 30-37 yards wide with new trees creating narrow chute. New fairway bunker left of landing area, right side bunker extended.
Craig: Smacked tee shot into right side bunker. Picked second shot out but left short of bunker that runs perpendicular, about 100 yards out. Found ball in thick rough and tried 7-iron for chip and run. Rough grabbed club. Fourth flew green, lost ball. Dropped and chipped, ran down green. Three-putt. Score: 9.

Hole #3: Par-4, 404 yards.

USGA: Dogleg left, new tee added for Open. Tee shots need carry and set up for players with draw. Enlarged green slopes softly right to left.
Craig: After rough start, found tees all the way back and need lots of carry. Hit great drive straight and landed in fairway. Second shot left just in front with 5-iron club. Chipped to back of green. Two-putt. Score: 5.

Hole #4: Par-4, 331-yards.

USGA: Ocean runs along right side. Nine bunkers including front one perpendicular to front of fairway. Entire left side of landing area trapped, premium on finding fairway.
Craig: Popped up drive to first bunker. Picked shot out to fairway, about 130 yards. Bad chip, lost ball off edge, deep grass. Drop, pitching wedge on, two-putt. Score: 7.

Hole #5: Par-3, 195-yards.

USGA: Hole hugs the sea along right side of first par-3. Wind tends to swirl. Tough, long grass behind green.
Craig: Wind took 4-iron over back of the green. After 4 minutes, found ball but duffed wedge. Wedge again and ball ran off front of green. Chipped up. Two-putt. Score: 6.

Hole #6: Par-5, 500-yards

USGA: Players choose between driver and 3W, ocean and steep cliff along right side of landing area. Five bunkers on left. Fairway right next to edge. If player doesn’t hit far enough, could have trouble reaching second shot landing up steep grade of heavy rough. Delicate third shot to tiny green bunkered on both sides.
Craig: Hit drive straight but short, finding landing area. Second shot with rescue 3W up hill, landed in deep rough as wind held, even though it bounced. Lost ball. Drop to deep grass, hit 7-iron blind up hill. Lost ball. Drop to less deep grass between bunkers. Wedge to green tight, about 5-feet. One-putt. Score: 7.

Hole #7: Par-3, 106-yards

USGA: Shortest hole in major championship golf is all about the wind. Tee area rebuilt and enlarged. Ocean and cliffs on right and behind green of signature hole.
Craig: Pitching wedge hit thin and off the face of the earth behind green. Dropped and skimmed across green with wedge to 3-foot thin bunker. Pick to green. Two-putt. Score: 6.

Hole #8: Par-4, 416-yards.

USGA: Blind tee shot up hill to landing area, 40-yards wide, moved to right near cliff. Then middle iron over chasm of crashing Pacific. Large landing area in front of green, long rough. Green expanded left side.
Craig: Straight drive to top of first landing area. Skulled 3W into chasm, lost ball. Drop and hit 8-iron to rough on left. Wedge to front right of green. Putted around edge, right to left. Tap in. Score: 7.

Hole #9: Par-4, 462-yards. (505 for Open)

USGA: This could turn out to be the toughest hole on the course. Fairway widened and slopes severely toward ocean on right side. Approach to green dips and rises with green tucked in back.
Craig: Best hole of front nine. Straight drive aimed at greenskeeper watering, landing on top of landing area. Great view of ocean inlet. Rescue 3W shaped left to right in front of green. PW from 80-yards to left front of green. Two-putt. Score: 5.

Hole #10: Par-4, 430-yards. (495 for Open)

USGA: Tough tee shot. Right could roll to rough or down rocks to Carmel Bay. Left could find rough or three bunkers. Landing is 50-70 yards wide. Players can run ball onto putting surface.
Craig: Two great shots. Drive straight, followed by rescue 3W. Toed wedge to thin right bunker. Had to chip with back to pin into bunker again. Blast out of bunker. Two-putt. Score: 7.

Hole #11: Par-4, 373-yards. (390 for Open)

USGA: Blind tee shot to 25-yard wide landing area with swirling wind. Approach, only front left of green visible. Green slopes severely from back to front so putt or chip could run off surface.
Craig: Fairly straight drive found left side of fairway and actually found ball in thick grass. 5-iron blast out to front, about 100-yards. PW into big right bunker. SW out. Two-putt. Score: 6.

Hole #12: Par-3, 201-yards.

USGA: Tough green to hold, firmest on course. Feed tee shot in from right to left, softly. If hit middle of green will bounce into rough or sand.
Craig: Found big left bunker in front of green. SW out. Two-putt. Score: 4.

Hole #13: Par-4, 393-yards (445 for Open)

USGA: New tee 40 yards back so have to hit drives 245-260, into wind. Large, pistol shaped bunker on left. Fairway expanded for bailout.
Craig: Found rough on right, fading drive. 6-iron to rough on right, behind bunkers. PW across green left. Chipped uphill to green’s edge. Three-putt. Score: 7.

Hole #14: Par-5, 572-yards.

USGA: Fairway width in driving zone goes from 44-27 yards, aggressive tee shot risky. Two bunkers added to left of fairway, one to right to pinch landing area. Large cypress planted on right, 100 yards from green. Closely mowed area in front, green enlarged.
Craig: Found rough off tee, about 200-yard drive. Hit 3-rescue also in right rough. PW over green. Chipped back to front of green. Three-putt slick. Score: 7.

Hole #15: Par-4, 396-yards.

USGA: Fairway narrowed 30-36 yards, still one of the simpler holes. Long iron or fairway wood off tee. Five new fairway bunkers on left. Cypress trees directly across. Still, birdie potential.
Craig: Strong drive right side rough. 5-iron to 80-yards. PW to front edge of green. Sank 42-foot putt, curving right to left. Score: 4.

Hole #16: Par-4, 401-yards.

USGA: Drive up hill to upper shelf of fairway. Big bunker in front of landing zone. Players must avoid cross bunker 265 yards from tee, dip down and then up to green. Three large cypress trees added for dogleg right.
Craig: Drive up hill to left edge of landing zone, about 200-yards. Skulled 6-iron into cross bunker. Picked ball in bunker, flew over green next to TV tower. Lost ball in thick grass. PW downhill, ball ran off front of green. 7-iron chip to 20-feet. Two-putt. Score: 8.

Hole #17: Par-3, 178-yards (208 for Open)

USGA: Conditions can be deceptive here, hedge running along right side, grandstands to right of green. Players must pay attention to what flag is doing and expect more than you think. It’s a classic.
Craig: 5-iron off tee. Ball bounced in front of green and nestled in thick rough. Took full five minutes to find. Opened PW and nearly holed it, rolling by to eight feet. Two-putt. Score: 4.

Hole #18: Par-5, 543-yards.

USGA: Perhaps the finest finishing hole in golf, reachable in two heroic shots, depending on weather. Hitting fairway key because Pacific runs entire length of left side, start to finish. Fairway narrowed on right and expanded on left, near ocean. Two trees in middle of fairway moved 20 yards farther from tee to guard landing area. 85-foot cypress in front of green.
Craig: Striped drive to about 20 yards behind two trees, in fairway. 3-rescue hit down right side to fairway, leaving about 120-yards to green. 9-iron landed right greenside bunker’s upslope. Blasted out to six-feet. Two-putt. Score: 6.
