1st Annual event raises money for Chiari 1 Malformation
The First Annual Swiss Capital Harbor Foundation-USA Golf Tournament and Bavarian Beer Fest will take place at Wolferts Roost Country Club on August 31st. All proceeds go to our Chiari I Malformation Project and our Club Zoe Youth Development Program.
Chiari I Malformation is a herniation of the cerebellum through the large opening in the base of the skull into the spinal canal. The herniated tissue blocks the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and can lead to the formation of a cavity called syringomyelia or a syrinx within the spinal cord.
Chiari is generally considered to be a congenital disorder and the majority of patients complain of severe headache and neck pain. Other common symptoms are dizziness, vertigo, disequilibrium, visual disturbances, ringing in the ears, difficulty swallowing, palpitations, sleep apnea, muscle weakness, impaired fine motor skills, chronic fatigue and painful tingling of the hands and feet. Due to the complexity of Chiari symptoms patients are frequently misdiagnosed. If left untreated, Chiari and Syringomyelia can lead to paralysis. This is why it is so important to spread awareness of this relatively unknown condition. The Swiss Capital Harbor Foundation is also raising funds to financially assist Chiari and Syringomyelia patients who cannot afford the expensive treatment and surgery.
Club Zoe Youth Enrichment Center in located in the South End of Albany.
