Colonie Attorney Doesn’t Let Weather Affect His Play on Area Golf Courses

By Mike Dyer

COLONIE, March 26…..Don’t tell Mike Tommaney of Colonie it’s too cold to play golf.

The 63-year-old father of three established a Capital District record (we believe) when he played at least nine holes a month for 58 consecutive months on area courses.

“I’ve teed it up in 17 degree weather with snow on the ground,” the real estate attorney says. “I love the game.”

It’s not that Tommaney is so terrific with his woods and irons. He has only a 27 handicap….but he enjoys the challenges.

A graduate of Vincentian Institute, Siena College and Albany Law School, Tommaney says he plays most of his bad weather golf at EverGreen Country Club in Castleton, Eagle Crest Golf Club in Clifton Park, Winding Brook Country Club in Valatie and Stadium Golf Club in Schenectady.

He has never joined a country club. He plays most of his good-weather golf at Capital Hills Golf Club in Albany.

“My wife Sandy also plays golf,” he says, “but she isn’t as nutty as I am.” The streak for Tommaney ended in January. “It was after the ice storm and no golf courses were open,” he says. “But I started another streak in March.” Tommaney scored his lone hole-in-one at the old Albany Municipal Golf Course. He aced the 123-yard third hole with an 8-iron.

“I never thought my streak (of 9 holes) would end because of the weather,” he said. “I thought it would be something like age or an injury that slowed me down.”

He is also proud that he has posted at least one eagle on a par-3 hole, par-4 hole and par-5 hole.

Tommaney began his golf career while he was in junior high school. He left the game for many years but returned to the course in the late 1970s.

Off the course, Tommaney is also a bowler. He sports a 160 average at Sunset Recreation in Albany and had a high game of 268 and a high triple of 680 at the Albany Elks.
