2013: Shaker Ridge Country Club Golf Course Superintendent Jim Seaman inspects one of the club’s new bentgrass greens. Following an infestation of plant-parasitic nematodes (microscopic worms), the Loudonville-based club completed a $500,000 bent grass greens makeover. These state-of-the-art putting surfaces are easier on golf course budgets and the environment, since they require fewer pesticides to fend off bugs and weeds. They also require less water and fertilizer than annual bluegrass to keep them alive and well.

QUALIFIER AT SHAKER RIDGE

A total of 67 golfers from the Capital Area and beyond tee off Wednesday morning in the U.S. Open Qualifier at Shaker Ridge Country Club.

Among those in the mix is Rotterdam-native Bryan Bigley, who has advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying seven times from the Capital Area. He qualified last year at Mohawk Golf Club. He hasn’t played Shaker Ridge since the installation of the new green complexes but is familiar with the course from his Siena College playing days. He now plays on the Web.com tour and lives in Charlotte, NC.

He missed a trip to last year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont by two shots at Canoe Brook in Summit, NJ where he shot a 4-under-par 140 over 36 holes.

Mark Fitzgerald of the USGA congratulates Bryan Bigley as medalist after shooting 64 in the U.S. Open Qualifier at Schuyler Meadows Club on May 14, 2014.

Also set to tee off will be Eric Mabee, head pro from Pittsfield CC; Jim Gifford of Clifton Park, who qualified for Sectionals in 2014 at Schuyler Meadows, has advanced to Sectionals three times; Scott Berliner, an assistant pro at Hiland Golf Club, a six-time NENY PGA Player of the Year who was co-medalist at CC of Troy in 2015 has advanced to Sectionals three times; Dan Russo of Hagaman, who has more Capital Area major championships than any other current player, has moved to Sectionals one time; Jim Welch of Valatie, who has won the CC of Troy Invitational three times; and Ron Philo Jr., a Scotia-native and Director of Golf at Stowe Mountain Club in Vermont who played in the U.S. Open in 1999 at Pinehurst and the PGA Championship in 2005 at Baltusrol. Philo has advanced to the Sectional round six times.

Glenn Davis, head pro at Albany Country Club, has moved onto Sectionals two other times; Art Griffin won the 2015 CC of Troy Invitational; Garren Poirier of Vermont has qualified for the USGA Mid-Am several times and the Sectionals of the Open qualifying once out of Albany CC; Dylan Dethier of Williamstown wrote a book about playing golf around the country before college called “18 in America”; Ian Wilson of Poughkeepsie was an outstanding golfer from SUNY Cobleskill; Steve Quillinan Jr. won the Tri-County Match Play this past weekend at Colonie Golf & CC and will play with two familiar faces, Russo and Mike Wheeler of Schenectady; Scott Battiste is an assistant pro at Eagle Crest in Clifton Park; Justin Hearley is an assistant pro at Normanside CC; Corey Purcell just led his College of Saint Rose team to the D2 NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history; Jamie Jackson of Maine was an outstanding player at RPI; there are six players from Canada.
