Have You Caught ‘On The Green’?
MUST TEE TV: NEW MY4ALBANY GOLF SHOW
By Mike Collar
Editor’s note: Due to coverage of the New York Yankees this Thursday, “On The Green” will air at 7:00pm instead of its usual 7:30pm time period.
The Capital Area is a hotbed for golf so whether you’re a beginner of experienced golfer, “On the Green” is a weekly show for you – produced and broadcast locally on WNYA, My4Albany.
Hosted by veteran TV sportscaster Dan Murphy, the show airs Thursdays at 7:30pm with a re-broadcast Saturday mornings at 6:30.
It’s the first season for the show and Murphy is already pleased with the results – with stops including Stadium Golf Course, McGregor Links, Thunderhart at Sunny Hill, and Copake Country Club.
The show, produced by Mike Adamec of My4Albany, covers everything golf from A-to-Z.
“We’ve been bouncing around the idea for a couple of years,” Murphy said. “We thought it would be a good year to do the show. We saw this as an opportunity to do a show on broadcast TV.”
The list of regular contributors to the show includes Kay McMahon, “eduKaytion Golf” tips; Doug Evans, Assistant Director of the NENY PGA, “The Rules Guy”; Grant Socha, “fitness expert” and Bob Wilson, “Oak Ridge Golf”, Schenectady. Mohawk Golf Club head pro Jeremy Kerr has also been a regular part of the program.
Capitalareagolf.com has a segment on news and notes and upcoming tournaments, anchored by John Craig.
Each week the show features an interview with the owner/GM of the host club, a shot-by-shot tour of the course’s signature hole, LPGA Hall of Fame instructor McMahon offering tips, Evans on hand to present the rules of the game, plus segments on golf fitness and equipment, and the humorous “golf quiz” with weekly prizes of rounds of golf at the region’s top courses.
“I’ve done a lot of these type shows in the past,” Murphy said. “We got off to a soggy start and even did a show inside – that was nice.
“There are thousands and thousands of golfers in the area and plenty of courses. I like to think I have a pretty good feel of what people like,” said Murphy.
MY4’S BAG OF CLUBS
After Murphy and the station got the go-ahead, he contacted the golf courses through e-mails and phone calls to build his own bag of clubs.
“It’s nice for these courses,” Murphy said. “It gives them a chance to showcase what they have to offer. It takes a lot of time and work and preparation.
“Our show is different. That was my goal from the start. The only thing that really varies each week is the travel, depending on where the course is located.”
Murphy has planned 20 shows through September. There are still a few openings. For more information, e-mail My4Albany here: dan@mytv4albany.com (host) or michael@my4albany.com (producer).
“We make everybody look as good as possible,” Murphy said. “We’ve tweaked it a little bit since the start. I’m very happy.
“We absolutely are on top of what’s going on. We keep people up to date.”
WNYA-MY4 can be seen on Ch. 4 (Time Warner), Ch. 51 (broadcast TV) and Ch. 51 DirecTV.
