LEADS 2-DAY EVENT BY 3

LOUDONVILLE – In a few days, Nancy Kroll will be back in school teaching her special education students in East Greenbush, but she still has some unfinished business remaining on the golf course.
The Schenectady resident and Pinehaven Country Club member has her sights set on her sixth Northeastern Women’s Golf Association Championship, and she put herself in prime position to reach that goal with an 82 (+10) Tuesday to grab a three-shot lead over defending champion Kathy Harkins of Ballston Spa CC and second flight leader Caroline Merritt headed into Wednesday’s final round at Schuyler Meadows Club.
“I’d love to win this again, but I’ve got to play better and avoid the big numbers,” Kroll said. “I didn’t putt well today, but I love the greens here. I’ve got to find a way to avoid having that one blowup hole that I always seem to have in a major event. There is always that double- or triple-bogey that I seem to get.”
Kroll birdied the first and 12th holes but suffered a double bogey on the eighth hole. Earlier this summer, she had a similar blowup hole during the New York State Women’s Mid-Amateur, right back here at Schuyler Meadows, when she triple bogeyed the 17th hole.
“There always seems to be that one bad hole for me,” she said. “The good thing is that I’m usually able to come back and play well after that.”
Kroll, a former NYS Senior Women’s Amateur titlist, has had an excellent summer. She won her age group at this year’s NYS Senior Women’s Amateur at Corning CC, and she also won best-ball tournament at both Taconic and Stockbridge.
“It’s definitely been a solid year, but it’s not over yet,” she said. “Even though I’m going back to school, I won’t stop golfing. When school is out, I’m usually over at the golf course playing in the late afternoon. I’ve also got a few tournaments left in the fall, including The Audrey (at Pinehaven CC) and a Mixed Team event with Jerry Brescia at Taconic.”
Heidi Harkins of Ballston Spa CC, who teamed with Kate Oppedisano to win The Sykes at McGregor Links CC, is third in the first flight with an 86. Susan Johnson of Pine Brook GC tops the third flight with an 89, and Mary Assey of Ballston Spa CC leads the fourth flight with a 98.
