JUNIORS AT SARATOGA NATIONAL QUALIFIER
July 15: Kennedy Swedick of Voorheesville picked up where she left off in the Drive, Chip & Putt competition. Last season’s national finalist, who chipped in during competition at Augusta National on the eve of this year’s Masters, Swedick led her Girls 10-11 Division with 97 points on her home course of Saratoga National Golf Club.
Swedick practiced hard leading up to the competition and felt comfortable on her home turf. She even had a friend from the competition in April at Augusta, Kate Bennett, visit the week before for some golf and vacation. Bennett is from Fort Worth, TX and headed into sixth grade. On Saturday, Swedick blasted her field and earned first-place blue ribbons in each the Drive (31 points), Chip (21 points) and Putt (45 points).
Also making a return trip to the next round are both Will Braxton and AJ Cavotta out of the 14-15 age group. They tied with 139 points but Braxton earned the top spot and Cavotta the second.
Cavotta got the better of Braxton in the Driving (62-34) but Braxton turned the tables on Cavotta in Chipping (45-17) and they tied in Putting with 60 points each. Last year, both advanced to the Regional and just missed moving to Augusta.
One name not in the mix was Nicole Criscone of Clifton Park. The 2016 National Finalist, an 11-year old heading into sixth grade at Albany Academy for Girls, hurt her wrist prior to competition and had to withdraw.
This year, the top three juniors from each age division advance to the next step, the Sub-Regional Qualifier, hosted at The Renaissance Golf Club in Haverhill, MA on August 13.
Registration is still open for the next DCP qualifier on July 29. It will be held at Town of Colonie Golf Course. Also, if Capital Area players are interested, a DCP qualifier will be held at Okemo Valley in Ludlow, VT on Wednesday, August 2. Registration there is still open, too.
The Regional Final for those from the Capital Area will be at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamoroneck on Saturday, October 1. Winners there go to Augusta National in 2018.
