Your play: Because the ball is sitting on such an extreme upslope, don’t feel as though you need to use the most lofted club in your bag—your sand wedge, pitching wedge or even your 9-iron should do the trick. As Rick Smith demonstrates above, many golfers start down with the upper body, which pushes the club to the outside (left). To stay inside, let the legs and hips lead the downswing (right). Smith shows how to swing from the inside on pages 96-101. Below, note the dramatic difference in yardage between a downswing that approaches from 9 degrees outside the target line and one that comes from inside or on the line.
