Siena Frosh Donald DeNyse III Edges Two Golfers for Albany County Title
By Mike Dyer
COLONIE, June 8….Teenager Donald DeNyse III added to his golf titles here Sunday at Town of Colonie Golf Course.
The 19-year-old Siena College freshman became the youngest competitor to ever win the Albany County men’s amateur championship when his two-day total of 142 was just enough to take the championship.
“I was ready for a playoff,” DeNyse said after beating Jo
hn Vaccaro (Wolferts Roost Country Club) and Jim Mueller (Orchard Creek Golf Club) by a single shot.
A graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and former New York State Golf Association Junior champion, DeNyse began Sunday with a 3-shot lead over Albany’s Joel Quijano. But a double bogey on his very first hole gave DeNyse reason to be concerned.

Key shot was a 35-foot putt for birdie on the 15th hole which gave the Siena freshman a 2-shot lead over Vaccaro, 51-year-old Menands father of three. But the advantage was back to one when both players parred the 18th hole.

Mueller, 49, five-time Schenectady County champ, closed with 5 birdies and a 69 to get to within one shot of the lead.
Shaker Ridge Country Club’s Al Stranahan, 57, had just enough to get past Sycamore CC’s Mark
Russ for his second straight Albany seniors title.
DeNyse, three-time men’s champ at Capital Hills at Albany, is a management major at Siena. He is working this summer in the pro shop at Capital Hills.

“I wanted to keep the ball in play all day,” said DeNyse. “I would have been happy with 18 pars.”
