Young Giuliani, Bigley Tie for Medalist Laurels in New York State Open Qualifier

VOORHEESVILLE, June 6….The white New York Yankees cap was a tip-off.
His father is considered one of the greatest Yankee fans of all time. Twenty-two-year-old Andrew Giuliani, son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, knocked in three birdies Friday and tied for medalist laurels in a New York State Open qualifier at soggy Colonie Golf & Country Club.

Giuliani, a senior at Duke University, tied Pinehaven Country Club’s Bryan Bigley with one-under-par 71s. They led a group of six which qualified for the July 15-17 32nd annual New York State Open at Bethpage Black Course.

“Dad is working with Sen. John McCain,” Giuliani said of his father. “His health is excellent.”

The young Giuliani will be playing in his third consecutive Open at Bethpage, home of  the 2009 U.S. Open. Others to make the cut were Wolferts Roost Country Club member John Vaccaro (75); David Strawn of Lenox, Mass.; Capital Hills at Albany head pro Steve Vatter and Roost assistant pro Tye Grissom.

Vaccaro, the 2007 New York State Golf Association Mid-Am champion, said he won’t go to Bethpage. Instead he’ll compete in the New York State Men’s Amateur Championship at Pinehaven Country Club.

Watervliet native Jim Cocca, first alternate, would take Vaccaro’s spot. “I’d love the experience,” said Cocca, a lefty and motel owner.

Here are Friday’s results:
