Duncan, Mueller and Elder Bigley Return to Pinehaven for State’s Amateur Championship

BALLSTON SPA — Former golf professional Randy Duncan will be going “home” for the 86th annual New York State Golf Association’s men’s Amateur Championship.

The 48-year-old pro turned amateur qualified Monday at steamy Ballston Spa Country Club for the State Am on July 15-19 at Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland.
Duncan was head pro at Pinehaven from 1986 to1998. The University of Alabama graduate, a member of Wolferts Roost Country Club the last 10 years, is happy to return to Pinehaven.
He’ll have company, Pinehaven course superintendent Rob Bigley and former Pinehaven standout Jim Mueller (now at Orchard Creek) also qualified at Ballston Spa. Co-medalists were Schuyler Meadows Club champ David Hayes of Loudonville and The Edison Club’s Justin Deitz, senior at Shenendehowa High. Both carded 2-over-par 73s.
Tied with 74s were Shen ninth grader Ryan Simpson, Ryan Ventre  of Saratoga Spa Golf Course and 18-year-old Rochester native Andrew Strom.
Two-time Tri-County champ Bob Cooper, new Albany champ Donald DeNyse III and McGregor Links’ Alex Macialek also made it. Another 21 area golfers qualified last week at Eagle Crest Golf Club.
