Inside the Ropes at Turning Stone Again
CAPITAL AREA PRO TALKS WITH TOURING PROS
By Dave Mahoney
VERNON – It certainly doesn’t feel like it, but it was only 10 months ago that we were here for the PGA Tour’s Turning Stone Resort Championship. This time around the weather is much better, which made today’s experience even better than last year’s.
As soon as I got to Turning Stone today, I made my way to the driving range and found myself watching Brad Faxon and Jay Williamson hitting balls at the end of the range. Then Mike Bennett came over to me and we chatted for a bit. Mike is the inventor of the new swing called “Stack and Tilt.” Two years ago we were paired together trying to qualify to play in this event. Today, I watched as he worked with both Jay and Brad.
Later in the afternoon, I had a wonderful opportunity to chat with Brad Faxon one-on-one. I was really excited because he is a student of Dr. Bob Rotella and I had the opportunity to also work with Doc.
We talked about Brad’s preparation, his mental approach, his love for the game and even his new commentating career with NBC Sports. This is one of many interviews you will be able see here at capitalareagolf.com. Keep checking in!!!
Other interviews I did were with Jonathan Byrd, Michael Sim, Jay Williamson, and Mark Wilson. Each interview covers a variety of topics, including the mental game, nutrition, exercise and what it takes to become a PGA touring professional.
From my experience playing, teaching, and talking with these guys, I have come to realize the importance of balance in a player’s life.
Unlike the way the game was 20 years ago, more and more golfers are becoming focused on exercise and nutrition. Furthermore, more golfers are speaking to the importance of rest, hobbies and vacation in between events.
I am a true believer that a happy golfer makes a better golfer. When you show up to the golf course in a relaxed state of mind, and your body is in good shape, you find yourself in the best place to perform.
So if you are a “serious” golfer who is looking to improve not only your golf game but your life as well, balance is the key. Devising a good exercise and nutrition program will surely enhance every part of your golf game. You will find that you are more focused, more energized and physically more capable to create the shots you have always dreamed of. With that said, you will enjoy your time much more so on the course.
